As the gun control debate continues, police in a town in Gonzales County east of San Antonio say they will not enforce laws that violate the second amendment.
Austin Harper, assistant police chief in Waelder, says they've taken an oath to uphold the constitution.
"If the federal government decided that they wanted to do something that the constitution said they couldn't do, then we would not back them up," said Harper.
"If the federal agents came in, we would not use our SWAT team with them. We're not
going to feed them, house them or talk to them."Harper told 550 KTSA News he released the statement last week to allay the fears being expressed by Waelder residents.
"It was to reassure the people that we're there for them. We're not going to turn against them and we're not going to be breaking down their doors and shooting at them to take away their legally-owned firearms," said Harper.
