Truckers Driving to Austin

By Bill O'Neil & Johnny Shannon

Truckers from around the State of Texas are expected in Austin Wednesday, where  they will outline their concerns for lawmakers. The big one in particular--the funding for roads.

"We have a serious issue that has been a continuing issue with financing our roads" said Texas Motor Transportation Association President John Esparza, adding "The fact that freight has been growing at an exponential rate. The fact that you've got a lot of energy players that have been putting a lot of pressure on the county levels. The fact the counties aren't able to keep up with their own maintenance."
Esparza told 550 KTSA News toll roads have had at least some positive impact in easing that stress.

"A road like (SH) 130 coming from outside of Seguin and surpasses Austin. The more vehicles that are out there--the safer I-35 can be" Esparza said.
While lawmakers can do very little to ease the burden of rising fuel costs, Esparza said he does see opportunity.
"That's a good segue to talk about the uses of natural gas and it's applications in trucking in this day and age" Esparza said.
