by Elizabeth RuizA suspected car thief who led officers on a chase is dead and a Bexar County Sheriff's Deputy is wounded.
Hollywood Park Police started chasing the man, who allegedly was driving a stolen vehicle, around 2:30 Friday afternoon. They lost him, but a Bexar County Sheriff's Deputy spotted him and started pursuing him, until the suspect crashed on Gibbs Sprawl Road.
As the man got out of the vehicle, he shot the deputy twice, stole his SUV and fled. A few miles away, he abandoned the vehicle and ran into a wooded area where he allegedly exchanged gunfire with a second deputy, but no one was injured in that gunfight.
The suspect then ran to the Summit Ridge mobile home park on Kitty Hawk where two members of the San Antonio Police Department's Gang Unit spotted him. Police say the officers got out of their vehicle and started running after him and as they approached him, he allegedly pointed his weapon at them and both officers fired several shots.
The suspect was shot several times and was pronounced dead on the scene.
The Officer Involved Shooting Team is investigating the incident and the San Antonio police officers who shot the suspect are on administrative duty.
The deputy who was shot twice was to be released from the hospital Friday evening.
Nine schools in the Judson Independent School District were locked down during the pursuit and ensuing shooting. Some bus routes were diverted away from the incident and some students who live in the Summit Ridge Mobile Home Park were taken to Miller's Point Elementary School where they waited to be picked up by their parents.
