By Bill O'NeilBexar County Commissioenrs send a message to state lawmakers with a call to line up behind federal efforts to expand the Medicaid program.
The move was pushed hard by County Judge Nelson Wolff, who said it could save the Bexar County Hospital District some $50 million by providing medical coverage to those who are currently uninsured.
"It also makes sense to covger those that do not have insurance--that are working hard--that are working for companies that do not provide it" Wolff said ahead of a Commissioner's Court vote on a resolution urging the state to accept the expansion, adding "Those that are not insured are being taken care of by your local taxpayer dollars."
The resolution received reluctant support from Commissioner Kevin Wolff.
"The federal government doesn't pay for this--you pay for it--and all we're doing is racking up bills" the Commissioner said, adding he would like the expansion plan a little more if some changes were made.
"This would be more palatable to me if the individual states had more freedom in how they actually utilize it."
