Consumer Protection Week Underway

By Bill O'Neil

Don't let technology turn you in to a victim--that's the message from the Better Business Bureau during this National Consumer Protection Week.
Certainly, some of the advice you might hear really should be common sense by now.
"Your computer should have the latest anti-virus software installed--along with a secure fire wall" said Javier Salazar with the Better Business Bureau. However, as technology continues to change, Salazar told 550 KTSA News there are many more ways for you to end up getting scammed--such as through your smart phone.
"Lock your phone. Add a security code to your phone to prevent thieves from accessing your data" Salazar said. Meanwhile, we've all seen all of the opportunities to get online through wi-fi--but Salazar said that can present a problem as well if you're not careful.
"If you choose to connect through an unsecured or public wi-fi network, don't enter passwords or access any personal data that you may have" Salazar said. And if you are planning to sell or doante that old smart phone to charity, he said make sure you have erased all of your personal information from the device before you let it go.
