Sequestration and the Border

By Bill O'Neil

Just where are the impacts of sequestration being felt? A San Antonio Congressman insists you can already find them at U.S. border crossings.

"I have talked to those folks--and I have asked them... tell me what's happening?" said Congressman Henry Cuellar, who told 550 KTSA News the impact is there.

"The lines have increased--people who are coming across--whether it's commercial or non-commercial--those lines have gotten bigger" Cuellar said, adding things will only get worse.

"Holy Weekend is coming up. That's a large amount of people from Mexico who will be coming in. If we don't fix it by that time, we're going to see some really big lines."

However, a check of a web site provided by U.S. Customs and Border Protection did not show any widespread delays at border crossings Tuesday Afternoon. In a statement, the agency said cuts in voertime did result in longer wait times at crossings over the weekend.

In the same staement, officials also said furlough notices will be going out to employees beginning Thursday.
