Daylight Saving Time Dark Walk to School

by Elizabeth Ruiz

It'll be dark when that school bus rolls around Monday morning after Daylight Saving Time goes into effect this weekend. We "spring forward" and lose an hour of sleep at 2 a.m. Sunday.
City councilman Diego Bernal is concerned about youngsters who will be walking to school in the dark, especially around those campuses that don't have adequate lighting.
He recently worked with the Ridgeview Elementary staff to get more street lighting along the Rampart corridor.
"When it's Daylight Saving Time, those kids are walking in the dark. We had to work really hard with CPS Energy to get those lights installed, but we got it done," Bernal told 550 KTSA News.
Now he's trying to get more lighting around the perimeter of Neal Elementary.
"Kids are coming in to get their breakfast and there's not enough lighting," he said.
Bernal is asking city staff to work with local school districts and CPS Energy to implement funding strategies for sidewalks and adequate lighting around schools.
"I'm asking the staff to develop a program and a budget that reflects these priorities," said Bernal.
One of the most recent projects Bernal helped facilitate is the sidewalk construction taking place on Fresno Road near Edison High School. He and his office also worked with city staff to obtain funding for additional street lighting and the construction of a sidewalk along the west end of the Edison campus.
