Water Conservation is the Key

By Bill O'Neil

A successful water future for Texas can largely be summed up with one word: "conservation." That's the finding of a newly released report--which claims the impact could be measured in the millions.
"Conservation in terms of our water use is the most cost effective, most ecologically sound, and the most effective way we can actually allocate our water managment resources" said Kara Kaufman with Environment Texas, pointing to some San Antonio programs that have been in place in recent years.

"Our city has grown by 65-percent while using the same amount of water--thanks to education programs and rebates for things like efficient toilets and drought tolerant landscaping" Kaufman said. On an expanded basis, she said such an effort could have a huge impact across the state.
"The Environment Texas report finds Texans could save 500-billion gallons of water per year by 2020--enough  to meet the needs of nine-million Texans."
