Two Local Airport Towers to Close

By Bill O'Neil

The offiicial list is out--and the Federal Aviation Administration will close control towers at two small San Antonio-area airports--thanks to the federal sequestration.

One of those towers that will close is at Stinson Municipal Airport--but officials said there's no cause for alarm.
"It's pretty standard practice for pilots to go to a unicom system--where they self report where they are" said Rich Johnson with the San Antonio Airport System.

"Beyond that, when they get above a certain altitude they report their position--and are tracked by the San Antonio International Air tower" Johnson told 550 KTSA News.

The tower at New Braunfels Municipal Airport is also slated to close. Officials with the FAA said a phased shutdown of towers at 149 airports around the country will begin April 7th.
