A gay family from San Antolnio has been thrust into the national spotlight as the debate over gay marriage rages on.
Anel Flores, her partner and their two teenage daughters were on the ABC TV show "Katie," hosted by Katie Couric Tuesday as the Supreme Court heard arguments on California's Proposition 8, which bans same-sex marriage.
Statistics from the Williams Instititute at the University of California in Los Angeles show that the percentage of same sex couples raising children in San Antonio is the highest in the country.
"Why do you think, Anel, that San Antonio is receptive to a family like yours?" asked Couric.
Flores replied,"Simply, it's a super loving city. I mean, the people are loving. The culture is very loving and family-oriented."
She says she and her partner, Erika Casasola, would like to get married.
"I think everyone should be given the opportunity to decide if they want to marry or not. We all should be given the chance to love," said Flores. Her 14-year-old daughter, Klarissa agrees.
"Whoever they love they should marry. I mean, that's the whole point of marriage. You marry who you want to love for the rest of your life," she said.
Eighteen-year-old Jessica told Couric they're a normal family.
"We have traditions. We have rules. We have heartbreaks. We go through the every-day thing just like other people do," said Jessica.
Meanwhile, Governor Rick Perry and Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst attended a rally of about 200 social conservatives outside the State Capitol in Austin.
The event was organized by a group called "Texas Values," which aims to protect the state's Christian heritage.
Republican State Representative Scott Sanford says a court ruling in favor of gay marriage would send the nation down a slippery slope.
"It'll be polygamy. It'll define marriage however you want," said Sanford.
He said he believes conservatives will win the national debate.
"We know we still have work to do, but by and large, the people who support the issues of faith and family, when they show up, they prevail," said Sanford.
