Ready for a Potential Pandemic

By Bill O'Neil

They're watching--and they're ready. The word from officials with Metro Health--as the world begins to take notice of a new bird flu strain in China.
There's no suggestion the illness--which is blamed for more than a dozen deaths in China--will ever arrive in San Antonio. But Metro Health's Assistant Director Doctor Vincent Nathan told 550 KTSA News officials are always in contact with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention--which is keeping an eye on the spread of such sickness.
"We rely on them to do a lot of our surveillance--and we have daily reports from CDC in that regard" Nathan said, adding the bird flu strain is on their radar--and officials do plan ahead--just in case.
"Locally, what we do is drill and do surveillance--and try to predict when things will happen" Nathan said. The Doctor also said the planning never stops.
"This year at the Alamodome, we had a vaccination-type drill. We had several thousand people out there."
