No Vote on Casino Gambling

By Bill O'Neil

Lots of Progress--that's what backers of efforts to bring casino gambling to Texas see--despite a State Senator's decision not to push for a vote on his plan to put the question on the ballot for you to decide.
Senator John Carona said he made the call amid heavy opposition in the Texas House. Despite the seback, Scott Dunaway with the Texas Gaming Associaiton said the work will go on.

"Year after year, our polling has shown 82% of Texans want an opportunity to vote on this issue--and that's our goal--to be sure they get that opportunity" Dunaway told 550 KTSA News. He said the effort has come a long way in a few short weeks.

"You have major race track interests and major casino interests at the same table and agreeing to a legisaltive package" Dunaway said. He and others beleive the plan could be back as soon as later this year--if a special legislative session is called to address school funding.

"I do think there are some details that would have to be worked out--but legislators are going to have all options on the table as they look for revenue to fund education in our state" Dunaway said.
