S.A. Gets an 'F' in Air Quality

By Johnny Shannon

The American Lung Association's "State of the Air 2013" report has graded Bexar County an "F,14 years in a row.

And it's because of the area's harmful level of ozone, or smog. To those who are sensitive, it can cause wheezing, coughing, asthma attacks, and even premature death.

The association's Senior Director of Environmental Health, Susannah Fuchs, tells 550 KTSA News  that it's not all bad.  "What we said in this report is that Bexar County has cut the year round particle polution-that's basically soot-on trend with what's happening across the whole nation, and that's good", adding that the ongoing problem is an unhealthy ozone level, or smog, a reaction of vehicle and industrial emissions exposed to heat and sunlight.

She also says "San Antonio's air is cleaner than it was 14 years ago, even a decade ago". But she cautioned "What we need to keep in mind are the steps taken by individuals, business and the community in general to reduce air polution. They need to keep happening for us to continue to clean our air up long term".
