West Explosion and the Governor's Race?

By Bill O'Neil

Could the explosion at the fertilizer plant in West become a part of the next campaign for Governor? In some ways, it already has.

Republican candidate Tom Pauken is pressing Governor Rick Perry and Attorney General Greg Abbott to release some information relating to the devastating blast.

"What we knew, what the state knew at what time" Pauken told 550 KTSA News in describing the information he wants to see. To this point, state officials have said such information is confidential--but Pauken said his question is a simple one--was the plant in compliance with state and fedderal rules at the time of the explosion?
"We're not talking about a full, exhaustive report--we're just asking for information to be disclosed that has been deemed to be confidential--which relays what the state knew--and when it knew it" Pauken explained, adding confidentiality isn't a reason to hold that information back.

"Sometimes you stamp confidential or secret on things in order to avoid--if you will--disclosing to the public things that there were things that should have been done" Pauken said.
