Pre-K 4 SA Pre Enrollment Begins

By Johnny Shannon and Bill O'Neil

Those who championed the Pre-K 4 SA Program are celebrating another milestone--with the start of the pre enrollment process.

"If you can do one thing to help insure that your child is going to be more successful for a lifetime--it's to make sure they get a great early childhood education" said Mayor Julian Castro, who added the program will continue to grow in the coming years.

"At full capacity, this is actually going to cover 37-hundred students a year--that begins in the fourth year. This first year it's seven-hundred" Castro said, pressign state lawmakers to do more.

"San Antonio doesn't have universal pre-k--but we have the closest thing that any big city in Texas will have to that. Now, Austin needs to do it's job to put the revenue there--so they can expand this statewide" Castro said.

As for those whoi will be teaching the children who enroll in the program--City Manager Sheryl Sculley said everything looks good.

"We have had and received more than five-hundred applications for outstandingg early childhood educators" Sculley said.

A number of pre-enrollment fairs are slated to take place by May 9th.
