Escalator Mishap at Convention Center

By Bill O'Neil

What went wrong? The question investigators are trying to answer after an escalator mishap at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center sends ten people to the hospital.

"At approximately 1 PM--and escalator in Hall D shut off" said Andrea DeLaune with the city's Convention and Sports Facilities Department. Of those taken to the hospital, she said at least one suffered life-threatening injuries.

"We had five people who are known refusals--in toher words, they had very minor injuries and felt they didn't need further medical attention" DeLaune told 550 KTSA News.

The incident took place during a Dish Network convention--which continued. DeLaune said inspections of the convention center's escalators--which are conducted by the state--are up to date.
