Helping Tornado Devastated OK

By KTSA News Staff

The pictures of devastation are no less shocking today--and the San Antonio area is doing it's part to assist the battered Oklahoma City area in ther aftermath of Monday's tornado outbreak.

Two San Antonio firefighters deployed to the region Monday Night to assist with rescue and recovery efforts as part of Texas Task Force One--while others are ready to go--should the call come in.

"We still have seven members of the San Antonio Fire Department who make up the Alamo Incident Managment Team--and they have been place on standby" said Christian Bove with the San Antonio Fire Department.

Relief agencies are also doing their part to help those facing the devastation.  That includes Red Cross Chapters in Texas.

"25 emergency response vehicles from various areas throughout the State and Oklahoma as well...we're also going to be releasing food trucks--so they'll be out there making meals for the people" said Rafael Aviles with the San Antonio Chapter of the American Red Cross. He attended Southern Nazarene University in the Oklahoma City area--and the images that come with the disaster hit very close to home.

"You just don't really realize how lucky you have it until you get in to a career field like what I'm in now--and you see this up close and personal" Aviles told 550 KTSA News.

The San Antonio chapter of the Salvation Army is on standby to provide assistance should the call come in.

"The Salvation Army is going to be there for as long as we're needed" said the chapter's Monica Ramos--if that call does come.

Both organizations said you can make a difference with a donation. For the Red Cross, you can call 1-800-Red-Cross, text Red Cross to 90999, or go online at www.redcross.org.

For the Salvation Army, call 1-800-Sal-Army, or go online at www.salvationarmyusa.org. You can also text a $10 donation at storm at 80888. If you would like to donate household goods--take them to any Salvation Army Thrift Store.
