Helping Our Neighbors to the North

By Bill O'Neil & Johnny Shannon

Doing their part for our neighbors in need--that's just what's happening in Helotes Thursday.
The organizers of the effort to load a semi trailer with supplies knew they had to act after seeing the pictures of the devastation in Oklahoma following Monday's devastating--and deadly tornado in Moore.
"My wife and I--we have some family that's up there. We called them, and they weren't affected by the tornado--but we could hear despair in their voice--and we just felt the Lord tugging at our hearts to do something" said Kevin Hyland--a member of the 4-H and Lifepoint SA church--which are teaming with a number of others on the effort.
"This thing has really snowballed in to a really big thing. Sam's is selling us water at about half the price--so we're getting six or eight pallets of water. It's really grown up to be a really big thing at this point" Hyland said.
They'll spend the day from 10:00 am until 7:00pm--or later if need be--loading the trailer with all sorts of items that are desperately needed in the disaster's aftermath.
"Things like baby diapers, baby wipes, hand sanitizer, flashlights, flashlight batteries--and non-perishable food too"  Hyland said.
Once the trailer is loaded it will leave for Oklahoma Friday Morning.
