Big Honor for Circuit of the Americas

By Bill O'Neil

A big win in New York for a brand new race track in Texas.

After just one running of the Formula One United States--at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin--it 's named the 2012 Sports Event of the Year by the influential Sports Business Journal.

"It is a thrill beyond anything I could express because we didn't expect said Red McCombs who is a major investor in the track. He told 550 KTSA News they're not exactly sure who nominated the event--but it usually takes years to build such high recognition.

"Without a doubt. I'd have bet a hundred to one we wouldn't have won that" McCombs said. Going forward, he said there are plans in the works at the track--including letting you drive the course for yourself.

"We're going to put together somedriving leagues--where the general public can be a member of a league and run their own cars on the F-1 (Formula One) track. We've sampled the market on that. We have a lot of interest in it" McCombs said, adding there are also plans in place for creating a kids cart league.
