Needs improvement--the word from an interest group in a newly issued report ranking the country's ffity largest cities by their parks.
By the numbers--the city placed 44th in the report. Simply put, the authors said most people live too far away from them to be able to enjoy them.
"Only about 8% of the city is devoted to parkland--which is a little bit below average" said Peter Harnik with the Center for City Park Excellence at The Trust for Public Land, adding "A larger number of small parks would fill in the missing gaps for many of the people who are too far from easily reaching a park."
Harnik insisted the ranking is not an indictment on San Antonio parks in general.
"You might have more than half a mile to walk to it--but when you get there, you have a pretty nice space to spread out in--which is terriffic" Harnik said, though the report aslo said San Antonio come sup short when it comes to playgrounds as well.
Of the fifty largest cities int he country, San ANtonio is the lowest ranking in Texas int he report--with Austin and Dallas tied for the top Texas cities at 26th.
