Council to Take Up Hemisfair Plans

By Bill O'Neil

With the ink on the Governor's signature allowing the changes barely dry--San Antonio's City Council is set to take up plans for a major transformation at Hemisfair Park.

"For 45 years, Hemisfair kind of sat there--without a real plan to revitalize it" said Mayor JUlian Castro earlier in the week. Thursday, City Council could take the first steps toward oing just that.

Votes are scheduled on four separate contracts before the Council.

"They begin to concentrate on what is the Southwest corner of the Hemisfair area" said Hemisfair Redevelopment CEO Andres Andujar. He told 550 KTSA News the big focus will be on a play area there.

"That area will expand from less than a half acre to an over four and a half acre play environment" Andujar said, adding "It will allow the area to be used for frisbies and walking your dog--walking--but also playing--for children to adults--what I call pre-k to gray."

The contracts also include the Magik Theater and several historic homes for renovation.
