An autopsy is pending on a female inmate found dead in the infirmary at the Bexar County Jail.
Officials say the 50-year-old prisoner was alert and responsive when a nurse checked on her at 3 pm Monday. She reportedly refused to take her prescribed medication, and 15-minutes later during a regular check, a nurse found her unconscious and unresponsive.
Authorities say the woman had a long history of medical issues and had been booked at the Bexar County Jail at least 10 times since 2009.
The most recent arrest occurred in March, when she was booked for theft and possession of a controlled substance.
A preliminary report indicates the inmate died of natural causes, but a final determination on the cause of death is pending in the Bexar County Medical Examiner's office.
