Puppies Left on Curb

By Bill O'Neil

A southside woman faces criminal charges amid shocking allegations of animal abuse.

Investigators told 550 KTSA News she placed two puppies inside of bags--tied them shut--then placed the bags inside of a box on the curb in front of a home on Chihuahua Street--almost leaving the animals as trash.

"It's really unfortunate--because that's how it ends up appearing" said Audra Houghton with Animal Care Services. One of the dogs survived--the other did not.

"This is a living animal, and he feels pain and suffers just like any other human or animal would" Houghton said, adding "We do beleive both puppies were alive when they were put inside of the box."

Houghton said a necropsy will be performed on the dog that didn't make it to determine a cause of death. The surviving dog--given the name "Gina"--remains very ill with parvo--a sickness that is often fatal to puppies. Houghton said none of it had to happen.

"Preventing the illness to begin with vaccinating them and taking proper care of them. As a pet owner, you are responsible for taking care of your animal" Houghton said.
