Abbott Launches Bid for Governor

By Bill O'Neil

It's official--Attorney General Greg Abbott is in the race for Texas Governor.

"I will never stop fighting--and that's why I'm asking you--the people oft he State of Texas--to elect me as your next Governor" the Attorney General said to applause in Downtown San Antonio. The announcement was made 29 years to the day of the accident that left Abbott paralyzed from the waist down.

Abbott pointed to nhis many fights with the federal government as he launched his campaign.

"Just as I've been a voice for liberty and the constitution--I'll be a voice for you. For children, for parents, for homeowners, and for small business owners" Abbott said, adding challenges such as water, roads, and education can be addressed through right-sizing government in Austin.

At least one political watcher sees smooth sailign for Abbott in the months head.

"Abbott has done an outstanding job over the past year of pretty much clearing the Republican field--as well as for the most part the Democratic field--barring a candidacy from someone like (State Senator) Wendy Davis" said Rice University Political Scientist Mark Jones. While much has been made of the Attorney General's connections to Governor Rick Perry--Jones said he doesn't see that as a negative.

"He's not seen as Perry's annoninted successor--he's seen as his own candidate in his own right" Jones said, adding "What helps Greg Abbott and works in his favor is he's not seen by Republicans as trying to push Governor Perry aside" Jones said.
