Cemetery Owner Gets 90 Days to Clean Up

by Elizabeth Ruiz

The owner of a cemetery in the city's Eastside has 90 days to clean it up before her next court appearance.

For years, Mario Salas and others who have relatives buried at Southern Memorial Eastview Cemetery have complained about sunken headstones, sinkholes, trash and high grass.

Now the Texas Attorney General's office has given JoAnn Ramon three months to resolve the problems.

"We think it's just a stalling tactic, but we'll see and that's where we stand right now," said Salas.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott sued Ramon last fall for operating without a license.

"We'd be completely surprised and shocked if she actually cleans the place up," Salas told 550 KTSA News.

Salas and others who have loved ones buried at the cemetery on Roland Road near Rigsby Avenue have formed a group called Cemetery Restoration Project.

"People who own plots are considering filing individual lawsuits as well," said Salas.
