There's good news and bad news for drivers on Highway 281 near Loop 1604. The Texas Tepartment of Transportation reopened Southbound 281 at Loop 1604 shortly before 5 pm Friday, but the news wasn't all good.
"The connectors on Northbound 281 to Loop 1604 are going to remain closed for another week," said Josh Donat with TxDOT.
Crews have been working on the Henderson Pass bridge since it was damaged by an 18-wheeler around noon Wednesday, but the work is not complete.
"The temporary fix involves a brace from on top of the bridge and part of that brace hangs down over the Northbound exit ramps that go to the 1604 connectors," Donat told 550 KTSA News.
That presents a clearance issue, especially for big rigs.
"In order to prevent any accidents, we're just going to keep that ramp closed," said Donat.
A total closure of U.S. 281 is planned for August 23 to allow TxDOT crews to permanently remove the damaged beam. Because the bridge is not in use, the damaged beam will not be replaced.
Nightly closures may occur next week to prepare for the total closure next weekend. Once the beam has been removed, all lanes - including the north-bound exits to the Loop 1604 connectors - will be reopened.
TxDOT expects these lanes to be reopened in time for the Monday morning commute August 26.
