On Guard for Measles

By Johnny Shannon

A statewide alert is in effect after the recent discovery of a number of measles cases--most in Norrth Texas. While none have been reported in the San Antonio area to this point--local health officials are working to get the word out to you to keep a close eye on the situation.

"The key is vaccination--every family needs to be aware--and make sure your kids are vaccinated" said Anil Mangla with Metro Health. He told 550 KTSA News there are signs of the illness to be watching for.

"A very specific dusty, red blotchy rash will appear on the face and neck. This normally starts at thairline--and then it spreads downward" Mangla said, adding certain age groups appear more likely to fall ill.

"The high risk groups are normally kids under the age of five--and then over the age of twenty. These are individuals highly at risk" Mangla said.

The last time a measles case was reported in Bexar County was 2007.
