TxDOT Plan Places Burden on Cities

By Elizabeth Ruiz

The Texas Transportation Commission wants to cut $165 million from its budget with a so-called "turnback' plan that would drive local budgets off the road.

The proposal would have TxDOT relinquish control of some state-maintained roads to cities and counties.  There are several in San Antonio and Bexar County, including Culebra and Bandera roads

State Representative Ruth Jones McClendon told 550 KTSA News it would amount to an additional $14 million dollars in road maintenance at the local level.

"You just don't put that kind of drop on municipalities and counties and expect them to pick up that amount.  That's a lot of money," McClendon said.

TxDOT has been told to cut $100 million dollars from its budget, but McClendon says this is not the way to do it.

"This would be an unfunded mandate on municipalities and rural areas," she said.

McClendon is urging Texans to write letters, make phone calls and send emails to  the Texas Transportation Commission in an effort to persuade members to reject the proposal.

The Commission is scheduled to discuss the issue at its meeting Thursday, August 29 in Austin.
