Undue Influence from Dewhurst?

Controversy is swirling around Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst--after he paced a phone call to police in North Texas on behalf of a relative jailed for shoplifiting.  
 
"I want you to do whatever is the proper thing--but this lady I know in my heart is not involved int he intentional walking out and straling 57-dollars" Dewhurst is heard telling police in Allen after a woman described as his step niece in law was taken in to custody for shoplifting groceris from a Kroger store. 

At one point, the Lieutenant Governor is heard asking to speak the the Sergeant's immediate supervisor--asking for his cell phone number. The Sergeant replies he does not give that information out.  

Both the Chairman of the Texas Democratic Party as well as Republican State Senator Dan Patrrick are criticizing Dewhurst--saying the Ieutenant Governor attempted to use his position to gain preferential treatment.
