You can sense the excitement among teachers and students alike--as most public schools in the San Antonio area get back to class.
"I believe that we are all going to the school year with a lot of enthusiasm" said Hillcrest Elementary School Fifth Grade Teacher Vidony Gonzalez, echoling an aticipation held by San Antonio Independent School District Superintendant Sylvester Perez--who told 550 KTSA News a lot of work lies ahead.
"We're going to really focus on reading--not only this year--but we're going to sustain that initiative from here on out" Perez said.
In the Northside Independent School District, they're celebrating a brand new school near Intersate 10 and Boerne Stage Road--names in honor of Doctor Sara McAndrew.
"It's the greatest honor I've ever received--I'm thrilled" McAndrew told 550 KTSA News. Other new schools in the district have been named for Doctor John Folks and Kay Franklin.
In the Northeast Independent School District, partents have the opportunity to take part in a "Boo Hoo Yahoo" Kinder Breakfast.
"A lot of timkes when parents are taking their children to school for the very first time it's really emotional" the District's Aubrey Chancellor said. She told 550 KTSA News parents can get together and reflect on that first-day ever of school for their kids.
Meanwhile--the Comal Independent School District waits one more day for their first day of claasses--with some record-breaking enrollment numbers.
"We're looking at more than 19-thousand students" the District's Julie Jerome told 550 KTSA News--a numbner that includes some 800 new students to this district this year.
