Big Labor Day Travel Numbers Expected

By Bill O'Neil

Hitting the roads, rails, and skies--the experts expect to see pre-recession travel numbers this Labor Day Holiday Weekend.

In fact, AAA forecasts 2.1 million Texans will hit the roads alone--reflecting an increase of more than fouyr-percent over last year.

"By air, about 222-thousand Texans will be flying--that is up 2.6% from last year" The Auto Club's Doug Shupe told 550 KTSA News, adding those who are traveling will weigh in with their wallets as well.

"Travelers say they expect to spend an average of $649 on transportation costs, accomodations, food and beverages, shopping, and entertainment" Shupe said.

So why the big bump? Shupe said it likely has somethign to do with how people are feeling about the economy these days.

"Home sales are at levels last seen before the recession began. Of course as home sales jump and home values go up, people have more money to spend ont hings like travel" Shupe said.
