Christie in Texas

By Bill O'Neil

He's both revered and reviled inside of the Republican Party--and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is making a swing through Texas--which includes a Monday fundraiser in San Antonio.

Christie's visit to the Lone Star State comes amid continuing talk of a possible White House run.

"The only real question,,, is he sufficiently conservative to surpass all the barriers that exist today in the Republican Party" said Rice University Political Science Department Chair Mark Jones, who told 550 KTSA News Christie does have some strong pull inside the Party today.

"Particularly among establishment Republicans and moderate Republicans for sopmeone like Chris Christie--who they feel would give the party a fighting chance if it has to go up against Hillary Clinton in 2016" Jones said.  However, Jones also said Chrisite does have some bridge building to do.

"You can get by with just establishment support, moderate support, and one other group--but you need at least social conservatives, or Tea Party elements, or the Libertarians--particularly the Tea Party elements or social conservatives today" Jones said.
