Accused Police Shooter Jailed

by Elizabeth Ruiz

A San Antonio police officer is in stable condition after being shot in the head, and the man accused of wounding him is behind bars at the Bexar County Jail.

Thirty-four-year-old Aaron Terrazas was shot around 8 .am. Monday while responding to a call for a family disturbance at the Super 8 Motel on North St. Mary's.

Sgt. Javier Salazar says the suspect then barricaded himself in the room for nearly 9 hours.

"Officers from the SWAT unit and the negotiators  spent the better part of the day talking to the suspect, trying to convince him to surrender peacefully," Salazar told 550 KTSA News.

The gunman surrendered shortly before 5 pm Monday.

"Thankfully, the suspect did surrender without incident and without injuring any other officers," said Salazar.

He says the shooting highlights the danger officers face when responding to family disturbance calls.

"Family disturbances are probably some of the more dangerous situations that officers face and this certainly proved that point," said Salazar.

While Terrazas suffered a gunshot wound to the head, he is expected to recover. He was reported in stable condition Monday night at San Antonio Military Medical Center.

"Thankfully, it wasn't as bad as it could have been.  He's going to be okay," said Salazar.
