New Regs for Absentee Home Owners

By Bill O'Neil

San Antonio's City Council gives the ok to plans for establishing a new registry for out of town porperty owners--whose homes have been cited more than once for code vioations. It's a problem many Councilmembers said they see in their own districts.

"We have a lot of absentee property owners from California or somehwere--that we can not really get in touch with--and talk about code compliance issues" said Councilwoman Elisa Chan.

The new registry could impact up to one-thousand homes said Assistant City Manager Rod Sanchez.

"They have two or more (code violations) within a 12 month period--those are the folks we want to have good information on so we can work on compliance" Sanchez said, adding the plan goes even further.

"We also want to require they have a local agent--someone living here in San Antonio that we can work with that once again--we can get quickler compliance" Sanchez said.

While Councilmembers are hopeful the registry will eliminate a problem, it does have it's critics as well.

"If San Antonio goes down a path of property registration, it's our fear that San Antonio will become a less attractive place to buy property" said Justin Landon with the San Antonio Board of Realtors.
