Plan Would Ban Perverts from Parks

by Elizabeth Ruiz

A proposal for a city ordinance aimed at keeping sex offenders away from city parks is moving forward.

"The governance committee, which is chaired by the Mayor, agreed that it's a good proposal and now, it will move back to my committee, which is public safety," said Councilman Carlton  Soules.

He told 550 KTSA News his plan is aimed at creating "child safety zones" around city parks.

"The police chief said he thought it would be a valuable tool and something that would be good for the community," said Soules.

The proposed ordinance would prohibit registered sex offenders from loitering at  city parks or living within a thousand feet of a park.

Soules hopes the final draft will go before the full City Council for a vote before the end of the year.
