TX Abortion Limits Unconstitutional

By KTSA News Staff

A federal judge rules new abortion limits that were due to go in to effect across Texas this week are unconstitutional.

Lawyers for opponents of the restrictions argued the requirement for a doctors performing abortions to have admitting privledges at a nearby hospital would force about one-third of all clinics in the state to close their doors.

Supporters of the new restrictions--passed earlier this year--argued the measure would save the lives of fetuses and pregnant women alike.

The debate over the law led to State Senaor Wendy Davis' filibuster during a special session of the Legislature--whic has helped propel her to a gubernatorial campaign. Attorney General Greg Abbott--the leadign Republican candidate for governor--was expected to file an emergency appeal with the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.
