Ex-Rey Feo Dies After Stroke

by Elizabeth Ruiz

Former Rey Feo and Ingram Park Auto Center owner Larry Benson, Sr. has died after suffering a stroke in Italy.

"It is with great sadness and a heavy heart to learn about the passing of my brother, Larry," said New Orleans Saints Owner Tom Benson.

Larry Benson was 68 years old and is survived by his son, Larry Benson, Jr.

"He loved the thrill and the excitement of Saints game day and the tip off of an NBA game, especially his San Antonio Spurs," said Tom Benson.

Benson served as El Rey Feo  65th this past year and reigned over activities during Fiesta San Antonio in April. Tom Sandoval with Rey Feo Scholarship, Inc. told 550 KTSA News that Benson raised more than $400,000 in scholarship funds and donated $1.5 million to St. Anthony Catholic School.

"Larry was a personality in his own way.  People thought he was an easy-going guy, but he was a very successful businessman who used his talents to raise money for scholarships," said Sandoval.

He says Larry loved San Antonio, even though he came from New Orleans.

"We express our condolences to all his family and his employees.  We hope that Larry is remembered for his good deeds," said Sandoval.

In his final act as El Rey Feo, Larry Benson crowned his successor, Jimmy Green, during a ceremony October 4 at the Alzafar Shrine Auditorium.
