Six soldiers wounded in separate attacks just days apart in Afghanistan are honored with Purple Hearts at Brooke Army Medical Center. One of those is Staff Sergeant Jerry Amis--who was immediately knocked unconcious when the vehicle he was in stuck an imporvised explosive device September 3rd.
"All I remember is I woke up in the hospital--and was in the hospital when I should have been in Afghanistan with the rest of the unit" Amis said following Tuesday's ceremony. Two fellow soldiers were wounded in the same attack--three more in a similar attack August 26th.
"I am wearing a back brace--I have two fractured vertabrae and a wedged disc" said Private First Class Dakota Coeart who was wounded in the earlier attack.
The Purple Hearts were presented by Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton Carter.
"They paid a privce, and we owe them the honor--and their families the honor--of remembering that and honoring that" Carter said, adding it is the skill and determination of these men and their fellow soldiers that has prevented the enemy from using the IED as a game-changer in Afghanistan.
