Challenger Aims at Cornyn

By Bill O'Neil

One of Senator John Cornyn's Primary challengers officially launches his campaign--as the GOP's Number Two in the U.S. Senate pints to a high level endorsement.

For the Senator, the re-election thumbs up from the National Rifle Association speaks volumes.

"I think that kind of endorsement will help confirm the fact I have a conservative voting record" Cornyn said.

But Midlothian businessman and retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Ken Cope is not convinced. He told 550 KTSA News such endorsements are really more of a sign of what's wrong in Washington today.

"If I had been living a full time political career, I'm sure my ratings as a conservative would be right with his" Cope said, admitting he is a long shot.

Still, Cope said he's sensing more and more Republicans are feeling as though they are being left behind by the party's establishment--which is why he said he's hoping he can change that with his campaign.
