TABC to Collect Taxes at Seaports

By Don Morgan

Crusie ship passengers returning to the Port of Galveston will soon be asked to pay taxes on cigarettes and alcohol they purchased while out of the country.

Ports Entry Director Karen Smithwick told 550 KTSA News it's not a new tax.

"The taxes have always been owed--we're just now able to begin collection of the beverages tax" Smithwick said, adding the funding for the collection of the cash was appropriated during the last session of the State's Legisalture.

"We're going to do the best that we can to not hold back traffic or cause any kind of disruption to the port facility's operations. The tax is strictly voluntary" Smithwick said.
