SA Braces for Air Force Downsizing

By Bill O'Neil

The impact will be felt--but City leaders are confident San Antonio can weather the storm that will come with the downsizing of the United States Air Force.

City Military Affiars Director Bob Murdock told 550 KTSA News the most likely place we'll see an impact is in the areas of trainign and education--particularly at Lackland and Randolph Air Force Bases.

"The (Defense) Department tends to downsize utilizing those that are about ready to retire--or retire and not backfill those positions" Murdock said.

Evidence of the downsizing effort can already be seen in the early retirement and voluntary separation notices that have gone out to some civilian Air Force employees in the area in recent weeks. Still, Murdock remains hopeful.

"I think the cuts will be realitvely small for San Antonio and for our installations" Murdock said.
