Missions Nominated for World List

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Federal officials say the Alamo and most of San Antonio Missions National Historical Park are being nominated for inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell announced Friday that the U.S. wants to recognize the San Antonio landmark as among the most significant cultural and natural sites in the world.

The nomination will be considered by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in 2015. If approved, the San Antonio Missions would join 21 U.S. sites such as Yellowstone National Park.

UNESCO may be best known for its efforts to protect heritage sites. Its core mission was to be an anti-extremist organization.
There are 981 sites in 160 countries, including the Taj Mahal, Stonehenge and the Great Barrier Reef.
