AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - More than a quarter of a million students have an unscheduled day off after a cold front left icy conditions in parts of Texas.
The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for the Houston, San Antonio and Austin areas until midday Friday.
The Houston Independent School District canceled classes Friday due to inclement weather. The state's largest district has more than 210,000 students.
Ice hindered drivers in parts of Central Texas. The Austin Independent School District and the University of Texas at Austin, with more than 50,000 students, canceled classes Friday. Texas State University in San Marcos, about 30 miles south of Austin, also called off school.
Forecasters say conditions are expected to improve by Saturday. Austin and San Antonio could see temperatures in the 70s by Sunday.
Here in San Antonio, all area and several surrounding area school districts cancelled classes, and The Texas Department of Transportation reported more than 300 traffic accidents.
