Smith Pushes Drought Prediction Bill

By Don Morgan

Could Congress take the bite out of future droughts with a piece of proposed legislation?

Nearly half of the State of Texas is currently experiencing some level of drought condition--but predicting where and when those conditions will happen is very difficult.

"We don not have that capability right now--and we seem to sort of be at the mercy of drought conditions that hit us sometimes sort of unexpectedly" said Congressman Lamar Smith. He told 550 KTSA News a bill he backs would help forecasters prepare people who live in areas that are prone to drought.

"In the future, because of this bill, we will be able to anticipate drought conditions earlier than we have before--and prepare for them better" Smith said, adding the drought of 2012 cost the national economy as much as $70 billion.
