Think You Smell Smoke?

By Bill O'Neil

Think you smell something burning in the air? There are no major wildfires burning in the San Antonio area Wednesday Afternoon--rather, that odor has travelled a long way to get here.

Forecaster Pat McDonald with the National Weather Service told 550 KTSA News there are two parts to the burning odor you may have noticed. The smaller part is some relatively small fires that are burning in the Fort Hood area. The larger part is a big dust storm that kicked up in the Amarillo area yesterday.

"People are smelling something--but they're not quite sure. This is probably about ten-percent smoke, and ninety-percent dust" McDonald said.

The odor blew in to the area as a front moved through Wednesday Morning--but it won't stick around for a long time.

"Probably by sunset, the smell will dissipate as the winds start to subside--and by tomorrow (Thursday) it should all have settled" McDonald said.
