There will be no vote whatsoever on downtown streetcar plans.
A non-binding referendum planned by local Republicans for net month's primary run-off is off--after elections officials recieved a second opinion on the ballot question from the Secretary of State's office.
The opinion said there's nothing in state law that prohibits such a question from being asked--but there's also nothing in the law to specifically allow it either.
"It's very disappointing on many levels becuase here we are again, the citizens of Bexar County and San Antonio aren't going to have their voices heard on a very hot issue" said Bexar County Republican Party Chairman Robert Stovall. He told 550 KTSA News he's doubly disappointed local Democrats refused to even consider following the GOP's lead.
"It is disappointing the Democratic Party never even gave it a thought to put this referendum ont he ballot" Stovall said.
Republicans will still be allowed to weigh in on the streetcar plan--at the party's website: www.bexargop.org
