After weeks of using social media to take swipes at each other--San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro and Republican Candidate for Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick are ready to debate on the issue of immigration.
For Patrick, the potential benefits of the debate are obvious. Rice University Political Science Chair Mark Jones told 550 KTSA News a strong showign could help propel him to his party's nomination--which will be decided in next month's run-off.
"It's just one more thing that will allow him to lock down victory on May 27th over (incumbent Lieutenant Governor) David Dewhurst--because it really shows his conservative credentials among Republican Primary voters who are concerned about what they would refer to as illegal immigration" Jones said.
As for Castro, Jones said his politcal aspirations could also get a boost as a result of the showdown.
"Mayor Castro wants to remain viable as the party's Gubernatorial Candidate in 2018--and this type of event really helps him" Jones said.
The two will square off at the Univision studios at 6 PM Tuesday.
