Firefighters Weigh in on Streetcars

By Bill O'Neil

Add San Antonio Firefighters to those voicing concern over plans for streetcars in Downtown San Antonio.

$400 million for less than six miles of track--that equation is simple when money is tight according to San Antonio Professional Firefighters Association President Chris Steele.

"The core services and public safety have to get priority in that spending" Steele told 550 KTSA News. He sid the stand has nothing to do with the debate over renegotiating pensions and benefits with the City.

"It's just part of the ongoing battle for us to make sure the city prioritizes where they should spend the money--which is on the firefighters and police officers that are boots on the ground--frontline--to take care of the citizens" Steele said.

The union is calling for a vote on the plan--VIA has previosult said state law will not allow such a vote.
