The Number Two Republican in the U.S. Senate joins his GOP colleagues in blocking a Democrat-led effort to raise the federal minimum wage to more than $10 per hour.
The measure would have raised the wage gradually--over the course of 30-monts--putting workers on a path to disaster said Senator John Cornyn.
"This is a job killer for Congress to mandate this 40% increase" Cornyn said, addign the most obvious solution for companies in the face of the rising payrolls that would have resulted would have been to cut back on workers amid a continued uncertain economy.
"The economy continues to struggle, in fact it has done worse here in the last few months than it has in the last year" Cornyn said.
The plan is one of President Barack Obama's top economic priorities for this election year.
