S.A. Officer to be Remembered in D.C.

By Bill O'Neil

A somber evening in Washington D,C. Wednesday--where the nation's fallen police officers will be honored with a candlelight vigil.

"We'll be adding 286 names to the Memorial's walls--186 of those officers died last year" said Craig Floyd, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund Chairman and CEO. Among the names to be added is that of Officer Bobby Deckard--who was shot and fatally wounded while chasing robbery suspectsw in his SAPD patrol car back in December.

While 100 officers dying in the line of duty is a big number, Floyd told 550 KTSA News that's actually the fewest in any year since 1944.

"The number of officers killed in traffic-related incidents the lowest since 1957--and the 31 officers killed by gunfire last year was actually the lowest we've seen since 1887" Floyd said.
